Porous Walker Interview
By Zach Smith

I have been following the work of Porous Walker for quite some time now, and the chance to learn more about his amazing work was a privilege. It is rare to find the creative energy that Porous incorporates in his work, and is bound to leave each viewer walking away amused. Porous talks about the year 20128, boobies sent to him in the mail, and a kickass LSD story.

When looking at your art, I can't help but laugh. This isn't because of the quality, but because of the topics and imagery you use. Do you intend on the viewer laughing and enjoying themselves when they view your art?

I guess, I tend to laugh sometimes at what I do, actually I take all the negative energy I receive throughout a day, and sort of poop it out through a pen and paper and it tends to naturally come out funny..It would make me very happy if what I do makes people laugh. There's only 1 thing better than laughter.

Your pieces have a range of topics and ideas - how does an idea pop into your head?

I tend to think a lot, like everyone. I assume that everyone has ideas constantly and some actually use a device to put them out...I guess ideas pop into my head, just like ideas pop into your head, or like how an idea used to pop into Orville Redenbachers head before he died.

What first got you expressing yourself through art?

The birth of my daughter 4 years ago, sort of put a new angle on things for my life.

How do you feel about the current art scene? I know you reside in Napa, which I am assuming is different than other places throughout the California art scenes.

Napa really doesn't have a 'art scene' that I know of, they probably do and I am just kept out of the loop...As far as the current art scene of the world, I think it is amazing and will only get better, the internet has truly helped and I am excited to see what the future holds as kids will grow up viewing such an amazing variety of artwork on top of the normal 'classics' I was introduced to as a kid, 2018 is going to be kick ass for art! I love seeing high school kids and younger pushing and sharing their art and ideas...

Advice for any artists wanting to get their art noticed?

Send physical samples of your art to your favorite artists, one way to get their physical addresses is to get a email, and tell them that you have something you want to send to them in the physical mail, 9 times out of 10 you will get a mailing address for which to ship a real piece of your art along with some cash, a coupon for a free steak dinner, etc... Keep it fun and interesting and remember most people love to receive free stuff (random stuff) in the mail...Physical mail, emails with attachments grow boring, so keep it real and don't ever stop, I think when you are the most nervous and afraid to share stuff is the time to do it. At least that is what has worked for me...

I love how you incorporate sex, naked characters, religious icons, and swear words in your pieces. Is there anything that is too much for you to reference?

I am not good at drawing realistic things, fine art/traditional style, so maybe that is too much...also, I don't like drawing kids, doesn't seem right to draw kids...I like when kids draw adults, kids art drawings of adults is the best..we all look really tall and stupid, which in actuality is pretty true.

How do you pay the bills?

I am the Creative Director of Marketing for Francis Ford Coppola and his company, Francis Ford Coppola presents. I have worked for he and his wife , Eleanor for the last 7 years and he recently appointed me to this position, theirs is truly an amazingly creative, generous and inspiring family...I am inspired on a daily basis by the passion they put into every thing they do...The companies they run are so much fun to be a part of, because we have a relatively small staff and they are involved in every single thing we produce...so good.

With your work having a lot of humor attached to it, do you think some artists today take themselves and their art too seriously, not giving them the chance to make a joke or two in their work like you.

No, I can't speak for what others have to say, or how they say it, I never intended for my work to come off as funny, I honestly want people to look at anything I make and scratch their head and say, 'What the Fuck?' that is and always has been my goal..so for me to look at someone elses work and try to interpret what they are 'trying' to convey is a bunch of hogwash. Not everything is funny, well almost everything, but not everything, I think when people say, gobbilygook, at the right time, that can be funny. Besides, someone like Tiffany Bozic does such beautiful work that all emotions are frozen and when I see her stuff I am left stunned and drooling, theres no time to even think about much...Matt Irving's stuff does the same thing to my brain...

I remember you did a Breast Cast for Keep-A-Breast about a year ago. How was this process, and are those your boobies?

The process was great, namely because it involved working with one of my favorites and greatest inspirations, Edith Abeyta, Edith asked me to participate and I will never say no to Edith, she is such a great artist as well as a great human, I also like the way she talks, seriously the way her voice sounds and mouth moves is pretty great.....No I was kind of excited about making the cast of my wifes' breasts but they sent us a 'pre-made' cast, I don't even know whose boobies those were, but they made a nice Hillside.

How was your LSD experiences? Did you meet Jesus, and if so how was his beard? Did you have a beard off?

Oh man, I had so much fun back in the early 90s using that stuff. Never had a bad time using that, mainly because it was a rule that right before I dropped any I would clear 'all bad things' from my mind, mainly 'forgetting' about real life stuff. Also, it was very important to try to be outdoors for these occassions. Never saw Jesus, but one fourth of July in '93, I ate some and joined some friends in a 'bottle rocket war'...growing up in St.Louis, traces of segregation still existed, there were parts of town where mostly white people lived and parts of town where mostly black people lived, pretty silly, but apparently thats the way all of our parents were raised and we were just 1 generation removed from those times, so one 4th of July we decided to have a bottle rocket war in a large field 'in the black neighborhood'...there were about 5 white dudes on LSD with shitloads of fireworks shooting them at each other in this field, before too long , the neighborhood kids were joining in, and eventually the whole neighborhood was out, we really couldn't see each other cause it was at night and only a few street lights around the perimeter of this huge field...we began our war fighting each other (the white dudes on LSD) and soon enough we were encircled in this field by a few hundred neighborhood locals, shooting random bottle rockets at us and making runs to try and tackle and fight us,etc...every once In a while we would hear ' I am gonna get my gat' and 'lets kill these yankees', we had a few hundred dollars worth of roman candles, etc. so we were well stocked and over the course of a few hours pushed the crowd back into the street and eventually on the front yard of some womans house, at this point the crowd was all under the street lights and in the street and there were a hundred or so, kids and adults all looking pretty pissed at us...the battle culminated with this old woman coming out of her house (the lawn we were standing on) with a broom and swinging it wildly at us, with the entire crowd and us rolling in laughter, than the cops pulled up and everyone split except us, who at this point had moved about a mile from our cars...I talked to one pair of cops through their window while all tripped out, and I must have looked either retarded or completely normal because they just told us to leave the area, than my friend Billy through a bottle rocket past me and it exploded on the cops windshield. Pretty funny, we ran like hell and I don't remember much except that we didn't get caught. I think everyone should experience LSD at least 2 or 3 times in their life, as long as they try to be outdoors and or very comfortable, and also having freed their minds of any negativity.

Where do you like to create your works - do you have a studio or what?

Outdoors is the best place to create artwork, also I create once the sun goes down. I have a gazebo in my back yard that I draw and create in, but I can do it anywhere.

Shout outs, yells, hollers?

People who hate me.
